What’s an EMP Attack and How Can You Prepare for It?

Comments Off on What’s an EMP Attack and How Can You Prepare for It?

The world has seen truly horrific events.

Hurricanes and earthquakes have killed millions of people over the centuries. But these are acts of nature, beyond our control. Some call them acts of God.

However, the world has a far more sinister enemy, one who poses a greater threat – man.

Throughout history, mankind has proven itself capable of unspeakable acts, typically under the notion of misguided righteousness. It can be seen in the Salem Witch Trials, U.S. slavery, and the infamous Holocaust.

While most of us feel immune to such devastation in our current society, an EMP attack could have consequences of epic proportions. In fact, an EMP bomb or series of bombs placed in the right locations could effectively throw whole cities into chaos.

The technology exists.

Fortunately, you can prepare for such an event. Keep reading to find out how.

What Is an EMP Attack?

First, you need to know what EMP stands for electromagnetic pulse. An EMP is designed to wipe out and permanently destroy electrical equipment.

An EMP attack works in three phases. The bomb won’t be an explosive in the traditional sense. Rather, an EMP bomb sends rapidly charges particles which are emitted in three waves.

The first wave of an EMP explosion is designed to create chaos amongst are machines that serve as protection, communication, sensors, etc. These devices are disrupted and rendered useless.

Next, a more destructive wave comes through, affecting electronics much as a lightning strike would. Since the first wave knocked down the initial defenses, these electronics are left exposed.

Finally, the final and most devastating pulse flows through electronic transmission lines, such as power cables. This leads to catastrophic damage at distribution centers (i.e. power plants) and destroys power lines.

How to Prepare for an EMP Attack

While EMP attack prevention rest in the hands of Homeland Security, there are steps you can personally take to prepare for one, in the event that our government fails to prevent it.

Our government is more than competent and has plenty of defenses in place. However, the world is far too vast for any entity to be omniscient.

Without electronics, the majority of our country would be left without communication. With no power, comes no heat, no airconditioning, no food preservation, no lights, and seemingly, no hope. We have grown far too reliant on electricity, which leaves us far too vulnerable.

Read through our quick guide on how to keep you and your family safe in the event of a catastrophic EMP attack.

1. Protect Your Necessary Electronics

First, there are certain electronics that would be hugely beneficial after an EMP attack. While you can protect your entire house or city, you can protect important electronic devices using Faraday bags or cages.

These protective devices store vital electronics and protect them against the electromagnetic pulses in the event of an EMP blast. While they work similarly, there are differences between a Faraday cage vs bag.

Here are some items to consider storing in Faraday cages or bags:

  • Flashlights
  • Rechargeable batteries
  • Solar battery chargers
  • Laptop with important documents/photos/information
  • Kindle full of survival books/instructionals
  • HAM radio
  • Walkie Talkies
  • Watches with solar abilities
  • Shortwave radio

2. Have a Predetermined Rendezvous Point

The biggest initial problem with an EMP attack is the large-scale loss of communication. How do you meet up with the rest of your family? What if your kids are at school?

You need to have a predetermined plan, including a rendezvous point. It’s unlikely that your child’s school will simply let kids walk home. If you have kids and the EMP attack occurs during school hours, your first priority should be getting them in your possession.

Your rendezvous point can be your home, an in-between location, or wherever. Just make sure everyone in on the same page. Have a backup plan as well, such as a secondary or final meeting point if people don’t arrive at the first location within a certain amount of time.

3. Have a Means of Protection

Next, understand that at the root of human nature is survival. Unfortunately, so is panic. A panicked person intent on survival can be wild, reckless, and dangerous.

Make sure you have the means to protect yourself and your family. In the event of a large-scale EMP attack, chaos will likely ensue.

We recommend staying out of sight, out of mind as much as possible. However, being armed and well-trained is also a wise idea.

4. Secure a Secondary Location

Next, you may want to find a secondary location for you and your family in case your home becomes compromised. For example, if you live in a large city, there’s a potential for rioting, looting, and even violence.

Keeping your family safe may mean keeping them far away from large groups of people. Remember, people as individuals are smart, but within a crowd can quickly become dangerous and unpredictable.

5. Stock Food and Supplies

At both your primary and secondary location, you need to stockpile plenty of food, water, and supplies. You don’t know how long any particular fallout will last after an EMP attack, but we recommend storing enough supplies to last at least three months.

This will give you and your family a large cushion to wait out the ensuing chaos that may come in the aftermath.

6. Educate Yourself and Your Loved Ones

Finally, the best way to ensure you and your family’s survival and safety during and after an EMP attack is with education.

Have a frank discussion in your family about terrorism, EMP attacks, and what steps are necessary for survival. It may seem far-fetched to some people, but the likelihood of an EMP attack is more than possible.

You should also spend time teaching yourself and members of your family survival techniques such as building fires, hunting and gathering food, self-defense, etc.

The Five Ps

When it comes to an EMP attack and your family’s safety, remember the five Ps taught to most people who serve in the military – Proper Planning Prevents Poor Performance.

Plan ahead and be prepared. Find a way to thrive, rather than simply survive.
