Since childhood, we’ve been taught to always wash everything we’re about to eat to make it safe for our health. However, very few people know that sometimes this habit does more harm than good. Washing certain foods can spread dangerous bacteria that make their way into your body and wreak havoc on your well-being.
You don’t need to wash store-bought eggs since they’ve already been washed during commercial processing. Plus, manufacturers often put special substances on eggs to protect them from bacterial contamination.
When you wash chicken or meat, the water helps the bacteria spread to your hands and the kitchen sink. Washing mushrooms isn’t a good idea because the more water mushrooms absorb, the weaker their flavor is. You should also never soak, remove the stalk, or peel them.
You absolutely have to wash fruits and vegetables with both edible and inedible skin. Don’t soak fruits and vegetables in water, either. This won’t clean them but only spread the bacteria. Use running water, it’s a safer bet. Just dry the food with a paper towel or a napkin after the “cold shower”.
Food will definitely get contaminated if you don’t wash the can really well before you open it. You should also always wash fresh nuts before eating them, even if they’re peeled.
